The role of the Department of Health is to provide strategic leadership for the health service and to ensure that Government policies for the sector are translated into actions and implemented effectively.

The role of the Secretary General is to provide:

  •  Effective management and leadership of the Department of Health, both in its  own direct work and in its leadership role for the overall health sector;
  • Advice to the Minister, the two Ministers of State and the Government on all health matters;
  •  Strategic leadership as a member of the overall system of public administration.

The person

The person appointed will have a proven track record as a leader and senior manager in a large or complex organisation in either the public or private sector and knowledge of, or capacity to acquire quickly, a broad understanding of the Department’s wide range of responsibilities. S/he will be required to set strategic direction and vision for the work of the Department having regard to the external environment, including understanding the broader public policy and political context.
