Leading Through Change

The ongoing development of managers skills to enable them to adopt a more strategic approach to their work is a constant priority for organisations striving to maintain competitiveness whilst also ensuring a continuous high standard of service delivery.

The HMI’s Leading Through Change programme aims to further develop the leadership and management skills of managers which will allow them to be involved in determining the strategic direction of their organisation. This programme which incorporates action learning is designed to encourage managers to work on projects that are relevant to the strategic plans and future direction of their organisation.

The programme comprises a mix of tutor led days, combined with self-directed and work based learning. The key objectives of this course are:

  • To develop the leadership and management skills of participants required for middle management positions and project implementation
  • To develop managers capable of moving from front-line to middle management positions or project leads
  • To enhance the skills of existing middle managers
  • To enable progress on a number of significant strategic corporate programmes or initiatives.

Leading through Change

Target Audience

Leading Through Change is designed to suit the needs of managers working in both clinical and non-clinical health service environments including hospitals, nursing homes and other healthcare facilities. It is aimed at those managers who wish to assume greater strategic and managerial responsibility in the future.

Course Content

This course covers the following areas:

  • Using management tools
  • Crafting a strategy
  • Implementing a strategy
  • Evaluating a strategy
  • Organisational culture
  • Working in teams
  • Communicating change
  • Presentation skills

Projects should be aligned with the strategic objectives of the organisation. They allow participants to make a significant contribution to their performance in areas of strategic importance. Support of a senior manager is advised.

Where QQI Level 6 accreditation is required, participants will be required to produce a case study; a work-based, strategic project report; and a presentation based on that project.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the programme participants will be able to:

  • Evaluate the strategic planning process
  • Assess the aims, short and long term objectives, SMART objectives, mission statements, policies and strategic vision of the organisation
  • Appraise group and teamwork
  • Assess the role of synergies within teams
  • Utilise a range of key management tools, to include SWOT and PESTEL, to analyse and draw conclusions
  • Formulate a strategic plan for a period of 3-5 years
  • Support the development of a mission statement and a strategic vision
