People Handling training DVD competition

Manual Handling DVDThe Health Management Institute of Ireland (HMI) used its annual conference to launch its latest training DVD, People Handling, aimed at staff working in healthcare in Ireland. Speaking at the launch of the training DVD, HMI President, Mr. Richard Dooley explained the importance of the new training resource. “People handling is a critical part of the patient experience in the healthcare setting. It is an essential competence for healthcare staff to ensure patient dignity and comfort while maintaining the safety of carers.”

Richard Dooley went on to praise the work of the development team and thanked the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists (ISCP) and Lelia Jennings of Occupational Physiotherapy Solutions (OPS) for their collaboration with the HMI on this highly specialised project. They ensured that the new DVD conformed with latest thinking and best practice with regard to patient handling.

The 30 minute DVD describes safer people handling practices. It features interviews with a chartered physiotherapist and addresses people handling risk assessments. It outlines the principles of safer handling and demonstrates a number of safer handling techniques. These include repositioning people with sliding sheets, assisting people to stand and walk with handling belts, and the use of roll boards in lateral transfers.

Richard Dooley also thanked the Bloomfield Care Centre, the Hermitage Medical Centre and the National Rehabilitation Hospital for their assistance in developing the training resource.
