The Irish National Dementia Strategy

The HMI West Region is delighted that John Linehan, Social Care Division, HSE, will present at the next regional meeting.

It is estimated that there are approximately 50,000 people with dementia in Ireland today. These numbers are expected to increase to over 140,000 by 2041. As a result, the Programme for Government 2011-2016 commited to developing ‘a national Alzheimer’s and other dementias strategy to 1) increase awareness 2) ensure early diagnosis and intervention and 3) develop enhanced community based services’.

John Linehan completed his nurse training in Cork University Hospital in 1985. He completed his Master’s Degree in Nursing in 2005 from the University of Manchester/RCN. He recently completed his Doctorate in Nursing through the School of Nursing and Midwifery, UCC. Having worked as a staff nurse and nurse tutor/lecturer he took up a number of nurse management posts in residential care settings for older people. Currently, he is the Regional Specialist for Services for Older People in the HSE South, and works with the National Social Care Division (Older People Services). He is the programme lead for the National Dementia Strategy.
