The Health Management Institute of Ireland (HMI) is the professional body for healthcare managers across all sectors of the health service in the Republic of Ireland. The HMI is dedicated to meeting the needs of the modern healthcare manager by providing its members with up-to-date and relevant information; training and professional development services; and networking opportunities.

The HMI Council

The Council is the governing body of the Institute. The Council consists of six officers including President, Vice President, Honorary Secretary, Honorary Treasurer, Honorary Director of Education and Honorary Editor. It also includes of a number of ordinary members and co-opted members. View HMI Past Presidents.

Richard Dooley

Richard Dooley, President, HMI

Network Manager, Hospital Group South East, HSE

Richard’s previous positions include: Regional Manager Community Services, South Eastern Health Board; General Manager,Waterford Regional Hospital; General Manager, St Luke’s Hospital, Kilkenny; and Hospital Care Manager, Acute Hospitals Programme, South Eastern Health Board.

Derek Greene

Derek Greene, Vice President, HMI

Chief Executive, National Rehabilitation Hospital, Dún Laoghaire

Derek’s previous positions include Assistant Secretary University College Dublin, Head of Human Resources in Beaumont Hospital and various assignments in Hospital Management, Human Resources and Community Care. He has also held positions in the private sector in various roles. Derek is a member of the IPD and holds a Masters Degree in Management from Trinity College Dublin and Irish Management Institute (IMI)

Denis Doherty

Denis’s former positions include: Director of the Health Boards Executive (HeBE); Director of the Office for Health Management; Chief Executive Officer, Midland Health Board; Chief Executive Officer, Mid Western Health Board; President, Standing Committee of the Hospitals of the European Union (HOPE). He is a Chartered Fellow of the Institute of Personnel and Development.

Lucy Nugent

Lucy Nugent, Honorary Secretary, HMI

Clinical & Patient Services Manager, Children’s University Hospital, Temple Street

Lucy has worked in the acute hospital sector for over 20 years and is a Registered Children’s Nurse and Registered General Nurse. She holds a Bachelor of Nursing Studies (Hons) from Dublin City University and an M.Sc. (Hons) in Healthcare Management from Trinity College, Dublin.

Gerard O’Callaghan

Gerard O’Callaghan, Honorary Treasurer, HMI

Chief Executive, South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital, Cork

Gerard was previously General Manager, Kerry General Hospital; Management Accountant for the Southern Health Board; and Finance and General Services Officer at Cork University Hospital. He is a qualified accountant (FCCA) and holds an M.Sc. in Management from Trinity College, Dublin.

Gerry O’Dwyer

Vice President, European Association of Hospital Managers

Gerry’s previous roles include HSE Network Manager for the Southern Hospitals Group; Chief Executive of Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin; and Deputy General Manager, Cork University Hospital Group. Gerry comes from a nursing background, formerly Chief Nursing Officer for St. Luke’s Hospital, Clonmel, Co. Tipperary and Chief Nursing Officer for the North Lee Catchment Area in Cork. He is a past president of the HMI.

Ann Marie O’Grady

Ann Marie O’Grady, Honorary Editor, HMI

Head of Clinical Services, Beaumont Hospital, Dublin

Ann Marie was appointed as Head of Clinical Services, Beaumont Hospital, Dublin in 2008. She has held previous clinical and managerial roles in both Ireland and New Zealand. She has held a number of positions in the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists including Vice Chairman. She was appointed to the National Social Work Qualifications Board by the Minister for Health and Children in 2010. She is a member of the Editorial Board of the EAHM which publishes ‘Hospital’ journal.

Dymphna Bracken

Dymphna Bracken, Ordinary Member

Area Communications Manager, HSE Dublin Mid Leinster

Dymphna holds a degree in Marketing and Public Relations and an MA in Public Relations from Sterling University. She is a member of the Irish Institute of Public Relations. She joined the Health Services as Communications Officer with the Midland Health Board in 1998. Prior to joining the health services she worked as a political and news journalist with the Limerick Leader.

Breda Crehan-Roche

Breda Crehan-Roche, Ordinary Member

Chief Executive, Ability West, Galway

Prior to joining Ability West, Breda held the following posts in the Midland Health Board/Health Service Executive: Project Specialist Disabilities; Continuous Quality Improvement Co-ordinator, Acute and Community Care Service; Director of Services for Persons with Disabilities; A/Assistant Chief Executive Office/Programme Manager, Community Care Services.

Rosarii Mannion

Rosarii Mannion, Ordinary Member

Assistant National Director HR, HSE Dublin North East

Prior to her current role Rosarii held senior positions in the areas of Employee Relations and Recruitment in the Irish Health Service. She holds a BA, Higher Diploma, MA in Healthcare Management and an M.Sc in Organisational Behaviour.

Geraldine Regan

Geraldine Regan, Ordinary Member

Director of Nursing, Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin

Geraldine is a registered Children’s and General Nurse. She also holds a BA in Public Management and an MA in Healthcare Management from the Institute of Public Administration. She has worked in hospitals in Ireland and the UK for over twenty years and has also worked in the voluntary/community sector. She is a past president of the Irish Association of Directors of Nursing and Midwifery.

Tom Daly

Tom Daly, Co-opted Member

Corporate Management, HSE, Manorhamilton

Tom has spent over 35 years in the public sector in various administrative and management posts mainly with the North Western Health Board including at Regional Management Team level and now with the HSE. He has particular responsibilities in the areas of cross-border and all-island health and social care and is a HSE representative on the Management Board of Co-Operation & Working Together (CAWT).

Cora McCaughan

Cora McCaughan, Co-opted Member

Deputy Director, Serious Incident Management Team, HSE

Cora has a B.Sc (Hons) in Physiotherapy from Trinity College Dublin, an M.Sc (Hons) in Occupational Health and Ergonomics from NUI; and a Diploma in Project Management from the South African Institute of Management Science. She was Chairperson of the Healthcare Risk Managers Forum from 2006 – 2010; a member of the Medical Council’s Standards in Practice Monitoring Sub-Committee; and Chairperson of the HSE’s Investigation Process Working Group.

Nicholas C. Jermyn

Nicholas C. Jermyn, Co-opted Member

Group Chief Executive & Director, St. Vincent’s Healthcare Group Incorporating St. Vincent’s University Hospital, St. Michael’s Hospital & St. Vincent’s Private Hospital.

Previously, Nicholas was Chief Executive in a number of Voluntary Hospitals. He was in the commercial and banking sector for a number of years, were he completed his studies at night before moving to the health sector in 1982. He has chaired and has been involved in numerous national initiatives and special advisory fora within the health sector over the years.


Regional Committees

There are four Regional Committees: Dublin North East, Dublin Mid Leinster, South and West. The Regional Committees are responsible for hosting regular events and meetings in their local region. Each Committee will consist of three officers including a Regional Chair, a Secretary and a Treasurer and Event Coordinator and a maximum of three ordinary members. The Regional Committees function under the auspices of a Council Member, who is responsible for setting up, supporting and monitoring the activities of the Regional Committee.

HMI and HRMF

HMI has developed a mutually beneficial relationship with the Healthcare Risk Managers’ Forum (HRMF). HRMF’s mission is to act as a national advisory body on healthcare risk management, to facilitate learning and sharing of information for members and to advance healthcare risk management knowledge and practice across the health service.

Office Staff

There are currently two full time administrative staff members who carry out the daily functions of the organisation.
