Target Audience

The course is for managers and team leads responsible for handling staff grievances or disciplinary matters. It is also suitable for HR professionals seeking to strengthen or update their knowledge of current procedures for those who may be required to investigate, chair, or participate in a grievance or disciplinary process.

Grievance and Discipline Course Content

Participants will explore the distinction between grievance and disciplinary processes, and the circumstances in which each should be used.

The workshop covers the core principles of fair procedure, including clear notification of allegations, disclosure of relevant evidence, a reasonable opportunity to respond, the right to be accompanied, an impartial decision-maker, and the right to appeal.

Participants will learn how to conduct each stage of a formal process, from initial complaint or allegation through investigation, hearing, and outcome, along with guidance on appropriate timelines and recordkeeping.

The course also addresses when informal resolution should be attempted first, the range of sanctions available in a disciplinary process, and the specific risks around findings of unfair dismissal where fair procedures are not followed.

Practical case studies and group discussion conclude the day, allowing participants to apply the principles covered to realistic workplace scenarios.
