This Business Case Preparation workshop will support participants to understand how to move from a good idea or service need to a clear, evidence-based and structured proposal that can be considered by local management, senior decision-makers and relevant approval processes. It will draw on practical quality improvement principles, including the need to identify the quality issue, understand the problem, develop a change idea, measure improvement, test, sustain and spread improvements.

Target Audience

This half-day workshop is designed for managers and other healthcare professionals who are increasingly involved in service developments, quality improvement initiatives, equipment proposals, staffing submissions and wider departmental projects.

Business Case Preparation Course Content

This workshop takes a highly practical and applied approach.

Rather than focusing on theory, participants will work through the core elements of a strong business case using realistic examples relevant to staffing proposals, equipment replacement, service redesign, access and waiting list improvements, patient pathway changes and quality improvement initiatives.

Business Case Preparation Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand what makes a strong business case in a healthcare context.
  • Distinguish between a service idea, a project proposal and a business case.
  • Structure a business case.
  • Clearly define the problem, need, opportunity or service risk being addressed.
  • Link proposals to service priorities, patient impact, quality, safety, access, workforce and value for money.
  • Identify relevant stakeholders and plan engagement before submitting a proposal.
  • Use BOSCARD as a simple planning tool to clarify the background, objectives, scope, constraints, assumptions, risks and deliverables.
  • Develop practical examples relevant to area/discipline.
  • Identify the evidence, data and narrative needed to make a proposal credible.
  • Leave with a practical approach for starting and completing a business case in their own department.
