Data Protection and the challenges to the health sector

DML Regional Meeting 25 June 2014

Speaker: Alex Burnham, IT Audit & Security Manager, Mazars

Title: Data Protection and the challenges to the health sector

Location: Dublin Dental University Hospital

Data Protection and the challenges to the health sector was the title of the presentation given by Alex Burnham to the most recent DML regional meeting.

The key challenge for data protection is accessibility V protection. To help set a context for the presentation, Alex told the audience that a medical record illegally obtained is worth €50 on the black market. A social security number on the other hand is worth only €1. Data protection is a major issue for healthcare environments where data breaches can incur huge costs in reputational, financial and legislative terms when a vulnerability has been exploited.

Alex’s presentation included an overview of data protection, the rules of data protection and how a data protection breach is defined. He also addressed the growing threat posed by cybercrime and outlined ten key steps to help organisations to reduce the risk of data breach.
